Outdoor dining is one of life’s simplest pleasures, but finding a tablecloth that fits beautifully around a parasol can be a challenge. At The Garden Tablecloth Co., we specialise in outdoor tablecloths with parasol holes — but for the crafty among you, here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own tablecloth with umbrella hole.

✂️ What You’ll Need to make a tablecloth with an umbrella hole
A tablecloth or fabric cut to size for your table
Scissors or a fabric rotary cutter
Measuring tape
Pencil or fabric chalk
Sewing machine or fabric glue
Bias tape or grommet ring (optional for a neater finish)
Iron and ironing board
🧵 Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Measure Your Table
First, determine the size of your table and how much overhang you’d like. Standard overhang is 15–25cm on each side. Cut your fabric accordingly.
2. Find the Centre
Fold your tablecloth in half one way, then the other to find the centre point. Mark it lightly with fabric chalk or pencil.
3. Cut the Hole
Measure the diameter of your parasol pole (most are around 4–5cm wide) and add 1–2cm for ease. Draw a circle at the centre point and carefully cut it out.
4. Create a Slit
To fit the cloth around the parasol, you’ll need a slit from one edge of the tablecloth to the centre hole. Use your scissors to make a straight cut.
5. Finish the Edges
This part gives your tablecloth a polished look:
Use bias tape to sew around the raw edges of the hole and slit.
Alternatively, fold the raw edges in twice and sew a hem.
For a professional touch, you could install a grommet ring around the hole.
6. Add Fasteners (Optional)
If you'd like the slit to stay closed, attach Velcro strips, snap buttons, or small ties along the cut edge.
🌿 Styling Tip:
Choose a fabric that complements your garden theme — think fresh florals, rustic stripes, or timeless gingham. For summer parties, match your napkins or outdoor cushions to the tablecloth for a cohesive look. Add rattan placemats, a jug of fresh wildflowers, and you're set for alfresco dining perfection.
